How are Cleft Lip and Palate treated?

Surgeries are done to correct the physical defects of Cleft Lip or Palate and repairs the tear between the lip and the Palate.  As the patient grows older, other surgeries can be done to improve breathing, hearing, speech, and language development.

Depending on the case, a patient is most likely to need speech therapy and orthodontic care to improve teeth positioning.

Difficulties with Cleft Lip and Palate

A patient with Cleft Lip/Palate may have a low self esteem, and can be concerned with their physical differences with other children.

Some doctors fear that if surgery is  performed too early on a baby, growth would be impaired, and if too late the teeth growth could be permanently endangered. After treatment, many people with the Cleft Lip or Palate grow to live a long healthy life
